About Me

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Pittsburgh has been home for most of my life except for several years when I attended college and lived for a few years afterward in New York City. I also lived for a short time in Philadelphia, PA and Washington, D.C. Obviously, I love music and dancing. I thoroughly enjoy the outdoors when the weather is favorable so we threw in an eight week soul line dancing in the park this summer. Although I have backed off a little this year due to my schedule running is still a passion of mine and I look forward to training for my next marathon. I have been blessed with excellent health, great energy and a positive spirit. On top of that I have the tremendous support and encouragement of my wife, Gail, my two sons, Roland Jr and Rashad, as well as my brothers and sisters and a growing army of friends. Today is the first day of the rest of my life

Yesterday October 4, 2008 was my birthday. I have just turned 60 years young. Yes, that's right, I said young! I still feel like I am in my 30's (many people have remarked that I still maintain a very youthful appearance). I have tried to live a healthy lifestyle and that has paid big dividends for me in the way I look and feel.

For me living a healthy lifestyle has always included the basics: eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking lots of water, and engaging in some form of exercise on a regular basis. I have been an avid runner for over 30 years and I've participated in all kinds of races and running events from races on the track to the marathon. In the last couple of years I have developed a new passion - soul line dancing.

I did not know that there was such a huge variety of interesting and exciting dances out there until I was invited by a friend from my running team to join her at a class almost two years ago. Since then I discovered with soul line dancing that I can maintain a very high level of fitness with much less wear and tear on my body than other forms of exercise. I'm told that we can burn between 250 and 300 calories in one hour of dancing. I've also found soul line dancing to be a lot of fun and very enjoyable and the fun and enjoyment gets multiplied when dancing with a group.

Now we are adding one or two new dances a week to the 80 plus dances we are teaching in classes and events in Pittsburgh. And we have started to network with people in other cities and states around the country who enjoy soul line dancing as much as we do. It has grown to the point locally where we now DJ a lot of our own events so that we can keep the vibe going with so many great new dances.

We would love to hear from you about your experiences with soul line dancing. We will soon post videos and photos of dances we are doing in the 'Burgh. We are very interested in knowing what some of the hottest and most popular soul line dances are in your area. We want to establish links with dance groups in other cities.

You can see some of the dances we do in Pittsburgh on our new website which is still very much a work in progress: Rolandfordlinedancing.com.

In the meantime remember to "love like you've never been hurt and dance like no one is watching."

Roland - You're the "King of Soul Line Dancing", not just because you love dancing as I do, but because you are so kind, patient and smooth as a teacher. The atmosphere (wherever you hold the sessions)is always safe and everyone has a great time. I used to go to CURVES but I found that a couple of sessions with you is like a week at CURVES - believe it! Thanks for giving of yourself to help others in their pursuit of physical fitness.

Peace and Blessings,
Diane Hope (Lady Di)

You are doing a wonderful job of spreading the art of soul line dancing in the Greater Pittsburgh vacinity. We are looking forward to the workshop on October 11 and sharing some of the dances we do in the Washington, DC area. Keep up the good work.
